Genetic Research Study - VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED
We have been approached by a research group at Oxford University to help to find families who would be prepared to take part in their latest study.

Studying Genetic Causes of Speech and Language Impairment
Dr Jane Hurst, Dr Samantha JL Knight and Dr Simon Fisher
Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust1 and University of Oxford2

Conditions involving speech and language impairment are very common and yet we still don’t understand very much about them. They are not an illness like measles or ‘flu’, so they can’t be caught by being close to an affected person and they can’t be vaccinated against. However, we do know that sometimes the problem can be genetic, a result of small changes in a person’s chromosomes (chromosomes contain a person’s genetic information and consist of many genes). Indeed, scientists have shown that small gains or losses of chromosomes as well as differences involving just single genes can result in speech and language difficulties. However, such studies have been limited and the vast majority of patients remain without a genetic diagnosis.

As it is important that children with speech and language impairments are offered comprehensive help as early as possible, we wish to determine if we can improve the number of genetic diagnoses by undertaking a new study. This study will use recently developed technology to test the genetic information contained within blood samples obtained from selected patients and their parents (we hope to recruit participants for our study through the help of family support groups and special schools). If we can provide genetic diagnoses earlier for a significant number of participants, then the level of care and future management of patients and their families may be directly affected.

If you are interested in hearing more about this study, and/or potentially taking part in the study group, telephone Gill on 01993 779184 or email info@oxfordshireafasic.co.uk for more information, or you can contact Dr Sam Knight direct at sknight@well.ox.ac.uk
